MORAVIAN FALLS — The Rams exacted their revenge Friday night in Moravian Falls.

Starmount slammed defending Mountain Valley Conference champ Wilkes Central, 42-7, in a payback game from last season’s defeat in the league championship.

A week after the offense dominated West Wilkes, the defense was the story of Friday’s match-up with the Eagles.

Leading the charge was senior Kyle Matthews. Matthews picked up a loose ball and rumbled 30 yards late in the first half before returning one of his two interceptions on the night for a touchdown to power the Rams.

Gunner Cass also recorded a pick in the game.

Offensively, Starmount rolled off 270 yards on the ground, paced by senior Aaron Skeens — 74 yards on eight carries (9.25 yards per carry).

Will Simpson added 70 yards rushing, while Ken Kelly tacked on 33 yards. Joe Walker (32 yards), Zach Freed (29) and Brandon Lopez (26) were one of six players who rushed for at least 26 yards in a balanced rushing attack.

Simpson, Freed, Walker and Lopez scored touchdowns for the Rams.

Starmount improved to 5-2 on the season, while remaining perfect in the league at 3-0, winning its fourth-straight game.

The Rams return home for only the third time this year Friday against conference front-runner North Wilkes (6-1, 3-0) in a first-place showdown.
