BOONE — The Buckin’ Elks hit the trails at the High Country Cross Country Classic in Boone Saturday in preparation for the Mountain Valley Conference meet later in the season.
On the rolling hills at State Farm Fields up the mountain, Shakai Ward turned in the top performance of the afternoon in a varsity race, placing 20th with a time of 21:39.
Kelsey Nicholson and Madeline Carter crossed the line together in 39th place in a time of 22:51 to round out the Elks’ finishers.
In the junior varsity race, Whitney Sprinkle paced the Lady Elks, finishing 31st in a time of 26:59, while Kari Faw finished 76th in 31:25.
On the boys’ side, Jacob Parker captured an individual gold medal in the junior varsity race, finishing with a time of 18:00 even, besting the field by nearly 20 seconds.
Blake Poplin followed with a 14th-place finish in a time of 19:03, while Said Javier crossed in 19th place in 19:11. Jonah Christian (24th - 19:35), Eli Brown (29th - 20:02), Lee Cudd (43rd - 20:28) and Hunter Norris (125th - 24:42) round out Elkin’s finishers.
Powered by Parker’s title, the Buckin’ Elks brought home a team bronze medal with 87 points, finishing 29 points behind front-runner Rock Hill.
Conference opponents Ashe County, West Wilkes and Wilkes Central also ran in the Classic.
