ELKIN - Hitting the halfway point of the Mountain Valley Conference, the Buckin’ Elks are in prime position in the 1A race.

Elkin sits alone atop the 1A standings with a 5-2 mark in league play, holding a comfortable two-game lead over second-place Starmount (3-3-1), including a head-to-head victory over the Rams. Three of the conference wins are over 1A opponents.

The Elks’ fifth conference victory didn’t come easy Monday night at home, however, as North Wilkes jumped ahead 3-1 to put Elkin in a halftime hole.

But the Elks answered the call, reeling off four straight goals in the half to grab a 4-3 edge. Senior captain Daniel Cortes led the charge, scoring two quick goals coming out of the break to knot the game up at 3-3.

Matthew Schumack then found the back of the net in the 68th minute for the game-winning goal.

Elkin returns to the field Thursday against West Wilkes in a stretch of four straight home games.
