ELKIN - The Lady Cardinals took another big step in defending their Mountain Valley Conference championship, sweeping local rival Elkin on the tennis courts.

Powered by four singles victories, East Wilkes knocked off the Elks, 7-2, last week on the road.

ShaNisha White and Molly Callaway battled to singles wins at No. 1 and 2, respectively, to lead the Cards.

But Makayla Dimmette and Ally Gentry answered with victories at No. 3 and 4 to bring Elkin even at 2-2.

McKenzie Stokes and Abby Burchette gave East a 4-2 lead after singles play with victories at No. 5 and 6.

In doubles play, the Cardinals put the finishing stamp on the convincing victory with a sweep, 8-6, 9-7, 8-5, completing the season sweep of the powerhouse Elks.

The win was a big bounce-back victory for East after falling to Ashe County, 5-4. The Cards and Huskies are now tied atop the Mountain Valley Conference standings with 9-1 records.

Elkin sits in third at 6-3, while Starmount is fourth at 4-5.
