STATESVILLE - With a Battle of the Bridge showdown with rival Starmount a week away, the Buckin’ Elks put on an offensive show on the road in Statesville Friday night.
Elkin dropped 50 points on 3A West Iredell to notch their second-straight impressive, non-conference victory, 50-34.
Junior quarterback Josh Strickland powered the Elks offensively, scoring four touchdowns in the game - two rushing, two passing. Jamiles Hayes and Kody King hauled in the scoring strikes.
The Elkin defense got into the action as well, blocking a Warrior punt and recovering the loose ball in the endzone for a touchdown.
After the game was knotted at 6-6 in the first, the Elks reeled off 17 straight points to grab a comfortable 23-6 advantage late in the half.
West scored just before the halftime horn to head into the locker room down 23-13.
But Elkin came out on fire in the second half, posting two quick scores to push the lead out to 36-13.
The win-less Warriors kept the game close, cutting the deficit as close as 36-28 in the fourth. But the Elks put the game out of reach with back-to-back interceptions on the final two drives of the night, preserving the 50-34 victory.
Elkin closed out a tough non-conference schedule with the win, posting a 3-1 mark to open the season.
The Elks return to the field Friday in the annual Battle of the Bridge match-up with Starmount in Boonville.
