According to an Elkin bridal store, fall weddings are just as popular as spring weddings.
Carol’s Wedding Shop located at 101 E. Main St. in Elkin has seen an influx of brides.
“We are doing fall weddings, tuxedos, and even dresses for homecoming,” said owner Carol Dobbins.
Carol started her business back in 1991.
“We were North Wilkesboro in the mall. The hours were too long. The store was called Carol’s Gift From the Heart, a consulting business and floral store,” said Dobbins.
“The hours were grueling at 7-days a week. Funny thing was back at that time The Tribune building was for sale, but I said that the building was too large for me,” she said in a laughter.
According to the bridal expert, she did not choose the bridal business as a first career.
“I taught school for 15 years for middle and high school students. Eventually I got into the consignment business, then retail, and eventually shifting to getting everything new,” she said.
“Don’t get me wrong, I loved teaching my students. It’s quite amazing because some of them are still getting married today,” she said.
According to Dobbins, brides always have anxiety when entering her store because weddings are a lot of work and its a production.
“Everything needs to be in sync. We don’t want anything to go wrong for them,” she said.
The most important advice Dobbins has for her customers is the budget.
“Brides need to keep to a budget. Brides mostly under project or over project. We try to steer them toward a realistic vision,” she Dobbins. “The most important thing is to stay focused and keeping the day special for the bride.
According to Dobbins, Elsie Boyd was her first seamstress. Boyd is credited for making over 100 wedding gowns and used to work for Oscar de la Renta, one of the world’s leading fashion designer.
“I can tell you that I’ve been so blessed as a seamstress from working with someone so gifted like Boyd,” she said.
Today, Carol masters the seamstress needs for the shop stating she has been sewing her entire life.
Dobbins is married for husband Benny for 42 years. Benny is retired from the Army National Guard where he served full time.
The Dobbins are residents of Jonesville and members of its First Baptist Church.
“I am very blessed. Never had a career that I didn’t love. Its been a warm and wonderful life. I’ve never devalued my appreciation for my customers that have so much allegiance for this business. We’re actually getting into the next generations of loyal customers,” said Dobbins.
“I really do want to retire one day. It’s hard because I am so connected to the life of the bride,” she said.
