ELKIN - Area teams hit the field tonight in non-conference finales in Week Five as league action gears up.
Elkin stormed out of its bye week with an impressive 18-7 victory over Surry Central in Dobson last week to improve to 2-1 on the season, grabbing a share of the Mountain Valley Conference lead in the process.
The Buckin’ Elks look to cap their tough non-conference schedule on a high note when they travel to Statesville tonight to take on win-less West Iredell.
The Warriors have allowed 171 yards in three blowout losses this year, boding well for Elkin’s high-powered offensive unit led by Josh Strickland, Kody King and Jamiles Hayes.
Former MVAC foes East Wilkes and Forbush square off in Ronda in the Cardinals’ final non-conference tilt of the year.
The Cards are still searching for their first win of the season after falling to North Iredell, 31-13, in Week Four, while the Falcons look to rebound from a heart-breaking 21-14 loss to rival Starmount last week.
The match-up will be a revenge game for the Cardinals after Forbush claimed the 34-20 victory last year - the Falcons’ lone win.
Elsewhere in the league, conference front-runners West and North Wilkes hit the road against Walkertown and North Surry, respectively, while Wilkes Central looks for its first win against unbeaten Watauga.
Starmount, Alleghany and Ashe County head into their respective bye weeks.
