RONDA - The Lady Cardinals took a big step in defending their Mountain Valley Conference tennis championship last week against perennial power Elkin.

East Wilkes knocked off the Buckin’ Elks 6-3 to notch their third league victory of the young season and remain on top of the conference standings.

The Cards won four singles matches to grab a comfortable 4-0 team lead as ShaNisha White, Kayla Pardue, Abby Burchette and McKenzie Stokes reeled off victories.

Miracle Walters and Makayla Dimmette won the final two singles matches for the Elks, winning at No. 1 and 3, respectively, in straight sets.

Walters and Payton Nicholson combined to knock off White and Molly Callaway in the first doubles match to cut the deficit to 4-3.

But East responded by winning the final two matches to claim the 6-3 victory and take control in the conference race.
