Mount Airy Chick-Fil-A holds Cow Appreciation Day

Chick-fil-A customers in Mount Airy were seeing spots before their eyes Friday as the restaurant held its first Cow Appreciation Day.

According to Manager Chad Tidd, this is the ninth year the Atlanta-based chain has held the celebration. In a nutshell, Chick-fil-A offered a free combo meal to any customer who visited one of its restaurants Friday dressed “head to hoof” as a cow.

“Cows have been around (as part of the eat more chicken campaign) with us for years,” said Tidd. “They are all about self-preservation. This event is one of their tactics to get our customers to eat more chicken.” He said the company is anticipating that nearly 1,000,000 customers will participate in the day this year.

Tidd said the antics of the cows are just another way to have fun with guests and make them feel welcome. Although this was the first year of the day at the Mount Airy store, he said he and his team were able to use statistics on similar events nationally to help plan for the day. The store celebrated its ten-month anniversary Thursday.

“We had the national figures to help guide us and get ready for today,” Tidd commented. “In the restaurant business you are always about looking for what will happen next. The team here loves a challenge. They work well together. We allow them to get in on the fun with our customers. It’s a great time for everyone. Like all Chick-fil-A employees they are great at smiling and we like being busy.”

As he was speaking employees formed a flash mob, dancing and beating on a cookie sheet with a large metal spoon and singing about loving to “MOOve” it.

“It’s all about creating a great experience for our guests every single time they come to our restaurant,” added Tidd. Information supplied by the company said that in 1012, nearly 800,000 customers visited Chick-fil-A restaurants across America.

Chick-fil-A has a web site dedicated to the event at www.CowAppreciationDay.com. The site offers details on the celebration and cow costume ideas, downloadable cow spots, masks and other bovine themed accessories for customers to use to create their costumes.

The chain is also conducting a photo contest on the Cow Appreciation Day sites where participants can submit a photo in one of three categories: best calf/calves, best cow and best herd for a chance to win prizes. Photos may be submitted until July 31.

“Every year we are amazed at the number of new customers who participate in Cow Appreciation Day, as well as the customers who make it an annual tradition with their families,” said Chick-fil-A Chief Marketing officer Steve RobinsonRobinson. “Reaching the one million customer mark will be a huge testament to the fun our guests have with the cow marketing campaign and their love of our food.”
