April 30, 2013

Relay for Life will be holding the annual cancer memorial and awareness walk Friday, May 3 at the Elkin High School football field. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and run until the next morning at 6 a.m., with team members taking turns to complete the event overnight.

So far there are 26 teams and 219 participants signed up, with over $21,000 raised.

The walk will begin with an opening ceremony designed to bring together those assembled and inspire and motivate them.

Following the introductions a survivor lap will be held with cancer survivors taking to the track while upbeat music plays. Those who are at the event to support cancer victims and survivors will stand by and cheer the survivors on by lining the track.

The Luminaria ceremony, a staple of the Relay events every year, will also be held. Supporters will decorate bags with candles inside to honor someone who is battling or beaten cancer, and in memorial of those who lost their fight.

The event will close Saturday morning with a ceremony to both remember and celebrate those who have fought cancer, and to celebrate those who have fought against it through walking and donations.
