WEST JEFFERSON - Needing a win to keep pace in the Mountain Valley Conference title, Elkin rode the arm and bat of ace Cayley Shoemaker past Ashe County Thursday afternoon.

Shoemaker fired a four-hit shutout to power the Lady Elks to a 3-0 victory, striking out seven en route to the win.

Offensively, Shoemaker went 2-for-4 at the dish and scored one of three runs in the game. Nicole Collins and Hannah Miles rounded out the scoring for the Elks.

In a pitchers’ duel, Elkin only managed four hits in the game, but capitalized on scoring opportunities.

The Elks improved to 8-5 on the season with the win to remain in the hunt for the second 1A seed in the upcoming state playoffs. Elkin trails East Wilkes (8-3) in the standings.

The Elks look to add another critical 1A victory Monday night against Alleghany up the mountain in Sparta.
