ELKIN - The Lady Elks split a pair of conference games against 2A opponents this week as league play picks up.
Elkin hung on to beat crosstown rival Starmount 3-1 Tuesday night before being blanked by power Wilkes Central 3-0 Wednesday night.
Against the Rams, Karla Fuentes gave the Elks a quick 1-0 lead on a penalty kick just four minutes into the game after Deyonna Gonzales was brought down in the box.
Payton Nicholson found the back of the net two minutes later from 15 yards out to give Elkin an early 2-0 lead.
After Starmount struck back and cut the lead to 2-1 just before the halftime whistle, Gonzales added an insurance goal 90 seconds into the second half. Gonzales found the net after picking up her own deflection.
Wednesday night, Elkin could not continue its recent surge - two wins a draw in its last three matches - against Wilkes Central.
The Eagles breezed to the 3-1 victory for their second conference victory.
Elkin returns to the pitch tonight against East Wilkes (2-4-1) in Ronda.
