Elkin High School students Shannon Tweddell and Daniel Heiner are being honored as the Family and Consumer Sciences outstanding students.
Heiner’s father has a culinary arts degree, and Daniel has been cooking since he was six or seven, said Barbara Long, CTE Director for Elkin City Schools.
“He excelled in the CTE Advanced Studies course, and is working on completing his first cookbook containing original recipes,” said Long.
In addition, he has worked in the food industry, and is always willing to help when the food classes prepare and serve luncheons and dinners, she said.
He hopes to one day open his own restaurant. His courses in Small Business/Entrepreneurship and Business Law, as well as the foods classes, should give him an idea of what to expect, Long said.
Tweddellhas only been in Elkin for two years, but in that time she has already completed all of the foods-related courses and has grown tremendously in the program, Long said. “She is working at a local bakery - Confections by Claire - and thinks it’s ‘pretty cool’,” said Long.
Shannon wants to attend Wilkes Community College to continue her education with a focus in baking and pastry. Shannon says her grandmother was her inspiration, and that she loves cooking.
