CARY - Eight Elks turned in strong performances at the 1A/2A North Carolina High School Athletic Association Swimming State Championships in Cary earlier this month.
Coley McCulloch and Tyler Eaton finished in the top 17 of their respective individual events, while the Elkin boys relay team swam to two top-14 finishes at the Triangle Aquatic Center.
McCulloch powered his way to a 10th-place finish in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 23.02, while Eaton finished 17th in the 100 yard butterfly in a time 59.56.
The Elk relay team of McCulloch, Eaton, Ashton Gant and David Morton paced the scoring on the day with two strong relay races. The team touched the wall eighth in the 200 yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:35.55 before finishing 14th in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:51.64.
The impressive outing allowed the Elkin boys to crack the top 20 in the final standings with 35 team points.
The Lady Elks relay team of Palmer Duncan, Payton Nicholson, Laken Beaver and Kirstan Beaver finished 21st in the 200 freestyle relay preliminaries in a time of 1:54.01, missing the cut for the finals.
Other area teams placed in the final standings for the girls, including East Surry in 12th and Mt. Airy in 35th.
