Two local artisans donated a colorful batik sampler queen-size quilt to help raise funds for the thirteen member libraries of the Northwestern Regional Library.
The quilt was donated by Carol McDowell who pieced the quilt and is a member of the Elkin Library Board of Trustees.
Amy Askins of Mount Airy quilted the work of art. The quilt was awarded in the Blue Ridge Quilt Festival in Blacksburg, Va.
“The Northwestern Regional Library is raising funds to help purchase eBooks in response to public requests and to offer up-to-date library services to the public,” said Joan Sherif with the Northwestern Regional Library system.
Those working with the fundraiser hope to bring in $20,000.
“I am a retired Air Force nurse,” said Carol McDowell, who started quilting in 1994 while serving.
“We were stationed in Alaska for 3 1/2 years,” said McDowell. “Quilting is a necessity in Alaska.”
McDowell belongs to Foothill Quilters Guild, a local quilting organization.
When asked what made her donate a quilt, McDowell said libraries are always in need of funds.
“The state has cut money year after year, and the libraries need our support,” she said.
Library officials say users can visit the NOOK Apps storefront to install the free OverDrive Media Console app. The app enables users to locate a library or school nearby, browse or search their eBook and MP3 audiobook collection and, after entering a valid library card or school ID, check out and download the title for a lending period of one to three weeks (depending on the library or school’s policies). At the end of the lending period, the title simply expires.
“The eBook collection is now compatible with the Amazon Kindle!” said Sherif. “Patrons can now download popular and classic eBooks to a Kindle device or any mobile device running the free Kindle app, such as iPhone, iPad, Android, and more.”
Tickets for the raffle can be purchased at the library, she said.
The winner of the raffle will be picked on June 1st.
