BOONVILLE - With a big win over Alleghany Friday night, coupled with an Ashe County loss, Starmount slipped into the second 2A slot in the Mountain Valley Conference standings.
The Rams dominated the Trojans from the opening tip Friday night, rolling to a crucial 58-40 victory. Meanwhile, the Huskies stumbled against North Wilkes, falling 54-40.
With the win, Starmount pulled ahead of Ashe (5-10) in the conference standings with a 5-9 mark with two games remaining.
The Rams put the game out of reach early with a big first half, grabbing a 34-23 lead at the break. Starmount then turned up its defensive pressure in the third, limiting the Trojans to just three points in the frame to take a 46-26 edge into the fourth.
Despite being out-scored 14-12 in the final period, the Rams coasted to the 18-point victory.
Luke Shore led the charge with a game-high 14 points, while Nathan Williams finished with nine points. Gunner Cass and James Ashley tacked on seven points apiece with Kyler Gregory adding six.
Heading into the final week of the season, the Rams control their own destiny for the No. 2 2A spot. Starmount returns to the court Tuesday against East Wilkes before hosting North Wilkes Friday on Senior Night in the season finale.
