ELKIN - Elkin’s chances for a berth in the Mountain Valley Conference tournament took a big hit Friday night.
A red-hot Forbush squad cruised past the Lady Elks 63-39, putting Elkin in a position to miss the postseason tourney next week.
With the loss, the Elks fell to 2-13 in league play, dropping them a half-game behind Alleghany (2-12) for the final spot in the tournament with one game remaining.
Forbush pulled ahead early, scoring the first seven points of the game, grabbing a 16-7 lead at the end of one. The Falcons pushed the advantage out to 21-9 midway through the second before Elkin responded.
The Elks closed the half on a 7-2 spurt to head into the locker room within striking distance at 23-16.
But the Falcons dominated the third quarter to put the game out reach. Forbush out-scored the Elks 19-9 in the frame to grab a 42-25 lead heading to the fourth.
In the final period, the Falcons put the finishing touches on the 63-39 victory.
Courtney Beals finished with 10 points on the night, while Makayla Dimmette added nine.
The Lady Elks return to the court Tuesday in their season finale against West Wilkes (9-4) with a berth in the conference tournament on the line.
Elkin will then keep an eye on Alleghany, who take on Forbush and East Wilkes this week to close out their regular season schedule.
