ELKIN - With the wrestling season hitting the home stretch, area teams are prepping for the Mountain Valley Conference Tournament over the final month of the season.

Starmount, who sits at 13-17 on the year and 3-2 in the conference, returns to the mat tonight with five duals left on their schedule. Elkin (7-11, 2-1) has seven conference matches remaining in the final month.

After kicking off the new year with three-straight wins over North Wilkes, Alleghany and Watauga, the Rams have dropped two matches in a row to West Iredell and Wilkes Central.

In their last outing, Starmount struggled with a tough Eagles side, falling 55-21.

Austin Baucom, Benton Branch, Ian Fennell and Michael Wood picked up wins for the Rams, with Baucom, Branch and Wood winning by pins. Fennell (28-4), the 10th ranked 170-pounder according to Retro Rankings, blanked Chris Ocampo 6-0 to round out Starmount’s wins.

The Buckin’ Elks were riding a streak of three wins in their last four duals into last Wednesday’s match agaist non-conference foe East Surry. After surrendering four forfeits, Elkin hung tough before falling 54-21.

Javier Said, Zane Millsaps, Dylan Gentry, Walker Longworth and Tyler Stoltzfus earned victories for the Elks, with Millsaps and Gentry pinning their opponents. Gentry (20-5) is an honorable mention on Retro Rankings’ 182-pound list.

Elkin hits the mat Tuesday night in Millers Creek against West Wilkes, while Starmount returns to action tonight against East Wilkes.
