Ten local families will receive a Christmas dinner thanks in part to LifeStore in Elkin.
The insurance business, located at 925 North Bridge St., is collecting non-perishable food items to fill 10 food baskets with Christmas dinner for needy families.
“It is a company-wide initiative … we all decided that in our own communities we would seek to feed families in need,” said Ann Ashman, senior vice president and branch manager of Elkin’s LifeStore.
Other LifeStore offices are located in West Jefferson, North Wilkesboro, Lenoir, Boone and Sparta.
Ashman said she contacted Elkin City Schools and Bridges Schools to gather a list of children in the school system who came from families with needs.
“We identified five families from each school system,” she said.
LifeStore will be collecting the non-perishable items including canned vegetables, brown sugar, flour, canned cranberry sauce, canned pumpkin and pie crust mix, canned milk, canned ham, biscuit or roll mix, package stuffing, cake mix, and non perishable items that children can eat while home from school such as granola bars and easy mac.
Monetary donations for purchasing extra food are also appreciated.
LifeStore will be collecting items and monetary donations until Dec. 19, at which point the food will be delivered to the families. Store hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
“We have had moderate participation so far, but of course we would really appreciate more,” Ashman said.
