After 16 years of service on the Elkin City School Board, Jim Westbrook will not be running for a 17th term.

Westbrook was voted onto the School Board in 1996 and has served each consecutive term since.

“I just spent a lot of years of service there, and I felt like it was time for some new energy to come on,” Westbrook said.

Westbrook said he decided to join the Elkin City School Board in 1996 because he knew what a great school system Elkin had, and he wanted to be a part of it.

“I knew a great reputation Elkin school system had, and what it had done for my boys (Elliot and Cooper Westbrook), and I wanted to be be as a big an influence as I could,” he said.

Westbrook, a practicing physician assistant, said he plans to still stay involved with the schools.

“I still want to stay attached with the system,” he said. “When my career slows down, I want to volunteer more and get involved within the schools.”

Fellow long-time school board member and previous principal, Larry Wagoner, will also not be running for another term.

Richard L. Brinegar and Haley M. Sullivan are running for Elkin City School Board to fill those positions.
