Laura Gaylord, a local artist and owner of website What’s Up in Elkin, N.C., has been appointed as Elkin’s new Main Street and Community Manager.
More than 30 applicants were interviewed in August after former Main Street and Community Manager Theresa Knops stepped down in July, said Leslie Schlender, the economic development director for the Town of Elkin. Knops had been with the Town of Elkin since October 2011.
She’s also involved in the Foothills Arts Council.
Gaylord stood out because of her knowledge and involvement in Elkin, Schlender said.
“She brings a lot to the table and has a strong project management in business and real estate,” Schlender said. “Laura has a lot of marketing initiative on her own with her What’s Up in Elkin site.”
Gaylord is active in the community through her website, What’s Up in Elkin, N.C. As a military wife, she has lived in different areas of North Carolina, Missouri, Kansas and Hawaii.
“She will continue running her website, and other websites for the town will evolve as well,” Schlender said.
The Main Street manager position was created in the 1990s as a part-time position when Elkin was made a Main Street Community. In 2010, the title changed to Main Street and Community Manager to encompass more than just Main Street and also focus on community-wide project, Town Manger Lloyd Payne told the Tribune in July.
Gaylord’s first day as the Main Street and Community Manager was on Monday, Sept. 10, Schlender said.
“We are thrilled to have her and very excited to have her as part of the Main Street team,” Schlender said.
Gaylord can be reached at Town Hall at 835-9856.
