USDA Commodities Distribution will be distributing free food for people in need on Thursday, Sept. 13 from 8 a.m. until noon at the old Winn-Dixie store location at Elkmont shopping center on North Bridge Street.
Veterans Memorial Park on West Lebanon Street in Mt. Airy will host a distribution the following day, Sept. 14.
The surplus foods are given out on back-to-back days each quarter in Elkin and Mt. Airy, allowing qualifying citizens in Surry Country to journey to the location nearest them.
“We are all aware of the importance of this food to the residents of our community striving to feed their families,” said Lorene Jones, coordinator of USDA Commodities Distribution.
Recipients must be a Surry County resident and must also qualify by the income guidelines.
“They must provide identification that states that they are a Surry County resident, but we will take them at their word on what their income level is,” Jones said.
USDA commodities are provided by the federal department of agriculture, and will be distributed with the help of Elkin High School JROTC students.
The foods which will be available at the distribution are: ground beef, green beans, beef stew, corn, apple juice, peaches, rice, and spaghetti sauce.
